The Arthur in photographs was not so different from the Arthur in real life. He held himself the same way, often as still in real life as the Arthur on the glossy page of a magazine. He was quiet, like the Arthur on film, and when he spoke, he said things easily forgotten – insults without any real hate and greetings without really seeing anyone. The more Alfred watched, the more he realised that Arthur was a picture – a portrait to be seen but not to be known.
